"You cannot imagine how well a young child learns from an older child; how patient the older child is with the difficulties of the younger." --Maria Montessori.
📚️Reading Buddies--a weekly experience where middle school students read to kinder and first graders is one of the ways we foster mentorship between age groups at Drachman. The whole community benefits when older and younger students are given opportunities like this for positive interactions.
Ms. Lily’s class went on a fire trip to Tucson Fire Station 1! They saw and experienced what it is like to be a fire fighter. They learned about different kinds of engines and looked inside. They sprayed down cones with the powerful hose. They even got to see some firefighters get in uniform and slide down the pole. We left with more appreciation for our community helpers!
This month’s Blue Watermelon Project featured ingredient is the snap pea! Our students had an incredible time with Chef Charleen as they learned to make delicious pancit. This hands-on cooking demonstration not only nourished our bodies but also encouraged teamwork, creativity, and a love for healthy ingredients. Cooking together fosters important life skills and connects us to the joy of food. Let's continue to celebrate healthy eating and learning!
We honor middle school students’ responsibility, effort, and growth each quarter with a special community celebration. Students who have completed their work and shown care in their choices are invited to enjoy time together—sharing food, playing games, enjoying music, and connecting outdoors.
These gatherings serve as a joyful acknowledgment of their hard work and a reminder of the joy that comes with being responsible members of our community.
The Montessori method is rooted in hands on discovery of real things. Camp Cooper came to present about all the wonders of our Sonoran Desert! The K-3 students handled various skulls, Saguaro ribs, and even the skin of a Gila Monster!
Our students are building a habitat for worms with coconut coir, coffee grounds, shredded paper, and soil. Each week, we’ll feed our new friends with food scraps from the cafeteria—transforming waste into nourishment and nourishment into rich soil. This is a hands-on lesson in partnership with AZ Community Transition teaches our students responsibility, sustainability, and respect for all beings.
